Mood swings

Urghhh I think that one of the hardest things to deal with and work through for me are my mood swings. Sometimes they come sliding in swiftly like a landslide, knocking me completely off balance and taking me completely by surprise. Other times it starts off like clouds on the horizon, gentling rolling in and accompanied by soft thunder – a beautiful sunny day changing into something different but not terrible and giving you enough time to prepare for it. Sometimes it’s little things that set it off and sometimes it takes days of letting things slide off my back. Sometimes it is absolutely nothing at all that I can put my finger on. Is this where people’s love of meditation & yoga start? πŸ˜‹

Eating well and staying hydrated are really vital. Aside from that, I try to take the first hour of every day for walking/running or prayer/meditation. I try to bring the fruits of these into my day which sometimes works for the day or at times, only the first 2 minutes after getting to work. I try to surrender myself to my shifting moods- try to detach and just “observe”- ask myself “what is really happening here?” I can be like Jekyll and Hyde (in my mind and to myself- not so much to co workers). The more I allow myself to engage with the mood, instead of observe, the worse my mood seems to become. Aside from physiology, usually there is negative self talk going on that will bring on a mood shift. You have to play detective.

Thanks Elizabeth, that is great advice! Negative self talk is something that I catch myself doing often and try to really make a conscientious effort to stop.

Well, I think a lot of those things are part of being human so try to be compassionate towards yourself which funnily enough is part of practicing mindfulness πŸ™‚ S x

I have no words of widom here because you may as well call me Jane (see what I did there…Jane…from Tarzan and Jane…mood swings) AAAAAnyway. I think sugar sentistivity has a lot to do with my moods and then there is the moon and PMS which accounts for me basically turning into a werewolf for 2 weeks out of the month. xxxx

Before I say this, let me clarify that I am FEMALE!

    I’m gonna say the H word……..

    I seem to have developed a bit of an obsession with hormones/alcohol/detox/hormones/moods lately. I don’t know if I’m detoxing/p’d off/stressed out/loving life/having a breakdown/schizophrenic, or just a moody bi**h.

I would love to develop a passion for meditation and yoga. I simply can’t get in the right “mood” for it! x

The vicissitudes of the alcoholic mind. Well, I’ve never once had it all figured out, as far as the swings are considered. Currently on a down swing myself. The middle ground has always eluded me.

I’m finding middle ground when I’m out in nature. Forcing myself to walk, take in my surroundings and focus on the trees, birds, sounds, etc. Sitting next to a stream or river and just focusing on the sounds. Sorry to hear you’re on a down swing, I hope that it improves soon for you.

Thanks for that. Nature is a good call. I’m going camping this weekend! With the little man. Hope it turns it all around.

    I’m moody, too!
I have nothing to add..you got great responses.
I think any exercise can help, but yoga and mediation can help calm the mind.
    Mindfulness is good, too.
    I love my yoga practice.

Thanks Wendy! I’ve started doing this new thing up here called Block Therapy and I love it! You lay on a small wooden block in different positions and it sounds painful but it’s not! (Well maybe a little in some of the positions but I feel great after!)

My Scorpio shows brightly most days…moody. lol. But yes, meditation and exercise (NOT yoga…ha ha) are helpful for me. The more I do, the better I am. When I don’t sleep well and put self-care aside, I get super grumpy. Or sit in self-pity. So I get it. I am better than before, but have a long way to go. You’re not alone!

Thanks Paul! It’s always nice to know I’m not alone when it comes to dealing with certain things – this journey can be lonely enough as it is πŸ™‚ I’m a Leo and have the moods to go with it haha

A major cause of my mood swings is food intolerances. I also get huge benefits from meditation and yoga, but I prefer to stop the misery at its source. If I avoid wheat, dairy, and some preservative that must be in deli turkey (and sugar), I feel generally pretty good mentally (though there are several other common foods that people often have sensitivities toward). You might consider an elimination diet to see if any of this is at work.
