That drunk stole my money! (day 7!)

7 days! 7 days STRAIGHT! I’m so excited! When I started this journey 6 weeks ago this seemed like an impossibility. I remember slapping that first patch on (quitting smoking with the nicotine patch) and telling people that I wasn’t drinking “because I was quitting smoking and drinking was a trigger for smoking for me”. A few days in I found a half a pack of smokes that I had brought back from the States back in April so those were my “it’s so overwhelming and I can’t do this and I’m going to rip someones face off if I don’t have a cigarette and glass of wine” cheaters. (The taste of those smokes made it easy to only have 1 or 2, btw – what the heck do you guys put in your cigs down in the States?!). That was the way I needed to start out I guess. Baby steps. Going from drinking 1-2 bottles of wine a night + smoking half a pack+ a day to cutting both out completely cold turkey? I think I would have found out pretty quickly if a serial killer lurked within my soul. The patch has helped immensely with the physical cravings for a smoke, but the mental cravings those first few weeks… oh boy… Another thing that has helped me is figuring out how much I have been spending on these two, and planning on what to spend all that money I’m saving on now.

Weekly:
2.5 boxes of wine @ $35/box = $87.50
3 packs of smokes @ $18/pack = $54
Weekly total = $141.50
Monthly total = $566.00
Yearly total = $6,792
5 Year total = $33,960

Hooollllyyyyyy shiiiiiitttt… that drunk stinky bitch stole my money a little bit at a time – $35 here (or $10 for a bottle if she couldn’t find $35), and $18 there. No wonder I had to remortgage my house once or twice and my line of credit and credit cards are racked up. I should have moved to the States years ago where the vices are cheaper 😉

So what am I going to do with all that extra $? Well, it isn’t all extra because I was digging myself deeper and deeper in debt each month, so I have to start paying that off, and the patch is almost as expensive as smoking was… and I think I’m spending at least half as much as I did on wine on CHOCOLATE… but I am going to spoil myself a little with books, some skin care products and little things here and there because I think that’s really, really important. I am also going to plan out some future trips. Maybe a cruise now that I don’t have to be worried about drunkenly falling overboard. (I am not even kidding about that). I think that drunk me loved adventure so much that the planning of future travel and adventures should help to appease her a little… along with the chocolate of course.

    Wow, you are this funny sober? You had me laughing out loud, which my husband came to investigate, and then I had to quickly pull up another computer screen because he doesn’t know about my blog. Hahaha! Quite a diversion around here.
    I had no idea you were quitting smoking at the same time. You just might be making history.

    You are strong for tackling both at once. I quit smokes years back using Nicorette (hard on your teeth but it absolutely slayed the cravings).

    There’s a handy app called “Quit That!” (it’s free) that will track precisely how much you’ve been saving by dropping the vices. I find it helpful and hope you do too.

      Thank you for the suggestion, I will check out that app! It’s the Nicorette patch that I’m using. I tried the gum & the oral spray before but I found that if I had a craving first and then used it then I would keep thinking about the craving – sort of obsessively lol, I’m not sure how to even explain it. After the first few weeks of the patch the cravings were mostly gone other than little twinges here and there. We’ll see how well I do when I finish the 8 weeks or whatever it is of the patch.

    “that drunk stinky bitch stole my money” i love that! drunk me always could rationalize spending $10-$20 every day on booze, but never wanted to spend money on anything else.
